Because she was sick as a very young child, her growth was stunted, and her face was scarred, resulting in her mother viewing her as unattractive and therefore someone who would never be able to get married. She wanted Caroline to become a maid, thinking that was her only option. Instead, Caroline relied on her talents in both music and astronomy and became a very successful person in her own right, proving a woman does not need a husband to have a fulfilling life.
