As of this day’s podcast, what happened to the backing music on Stuart’s outro VO? I miss it. mI think you should continue to lay that in there.
Great advice here. I’ve been a long-time observer, and my best sessions are planned in advance. But as I have planned, I have also noticed that this has allowed me to see the unexpected.
Last night, I was working through my monthly section of the Herschel 400; I was in the constellation Auriga when I chanced upon several intensely colored stars that I had not noticed before. Also, in my foray across Auriga, seeking my Herschel objects, I noticed that the area surrounding the star Psi Aurigae was incredibly rich and beautiful. Why have I not noticed this before? Without an observing plan, these fun sights might have gone unnoticed.
I have seen this phenomenon with almost any type of observing that I do, whether it be the moon, double stars, planets, or deep sky objects. There are surprises hidden in the observing plan.
Excellent podcast today, Ed.
Richard – that’s another great point. By having a focused plan, I think it encourages you to observe more because you’ll have more success, which also leads to those wonderful moments of serendipity. I’m a fan of little asterism and found one that looks like the famous “Kilroy” drawing near the Dumbbell Nebula. The sky is surely full of wonders.
I found Starry Night software more user frindly than any other astronomy program. I do agree that you should have some kind of plan before setting up and flying into space. Starry Night software has everything you need to start your adventure on the right foot. However if I’m not saying that there are no other programs out there that would do the same job as Starry Night. My point is that there are many softwares out that any one can use to look at the sky. I would have liked for Ed to mension two to three software in his podcast.
Mike – I love Starry Night too. I was trying to (as much as possible) only list free software. If folks are willing to spend a bit (though not too much), Starry Night and The Sky are both great.
